Stare
Adam stood by his tenth story apartment window and stared at the woman across the road, their gaze locked as tight as lovers’ lips, their expressions as vacant as the honeymoon suite at Hotel Cholera.
Suddenly, two pigeons collided between them. Their beaks locked together and one tried to fly up while the other went down. Back and forth they went, the commotion resembling two mimes having a screaming match in a washing machine.
Adam’s mouth twitched.
His phone buzzed.
“Hello?”
“You smiled.”
“Dang it! How did you not?” He looked away and blinked his tired eyes.
“Another round?”

It was good, but I didn’t smile. 🙄

That’s right, play it straight. Not even a twitch.

boy! power or stare!
January 15th, 2015 at 6:42 pm
Have you ever done that? I used to have staring contests with my sisters when I was young, but one of us always broke after a few seconds.

no, had i done it i would have lost, because i certainly would have started laughing after a minute!
January 15th, 2015 at 4:04 am
Oh, nice one!
January 15th, 2015 at 6:42 pm
Thanks. 🙂

Sounds like a fun game! Nicely done David. It speaks volumes for their relationship.
January 15th, 2015 at 6:42 pm
I haven’t decided if they’re just friends or more. They seem to have an odd relationship, if nothing else. 🙂
January 15th, 2015 at 8:42 am
Well, I laughed at “honeymoon suite at Hotel Cholera.” Never anticipated these two knew each other. Well done!
January 15th, 2015 at 6:40 pm
Yeah, I don’t think they have many reservations there. 🙂 Glad you liked it.

I enjoyed the bit of humor after a lot of mostly not funny or uplifting stories (although stories well-written).

The picture had a rather bleak aspect to it, so I’m not surprised. I’ve been slammed with work this week, so I haven’t read many, although I’m planning to tonight. I had a more serious one planned and then went a different route. 🙂

I love the Hotel Cholera…that made me take serious pause alright. I love the brevity yet every line has such pulp…like one good gulp of freshly squeezed orange juice 🙂
January 16th, 2015 at 9:20 pm
Thanks. I always love reading your comments. 🙂
January 18th, 2015 at 1:25 pm
I love reading your essays…you are so wild David. I’m Amish in comparison.
January 18th, 2015 at 3:14 pm
Hah! An Amish Susannah. I like that image. 🙂

Dear David,
Two mimes having a screaming match in a washing machine??? As a mime I’m greatly humored by that image alone. Then to find these two people are having a long distance staring match…priceless. Of course I’m smiling. How could I not?
Shalom,
Rochelle

Good. If you’re smiling, Rochelle, it’s all worthwhile. 🙂 I should have told people not to crack a smile while reading it, but that might have given it away.
Have a great weekend,
David

Wonder what’s going to happen next with them. Interesting enigmatic relationship.
January 16th, 2015 at 9:29 pm
I wonder. I kind of want to write another story about them, although maybe not a Fictioneers story.
January 16th, 2015 at 5:24 pm
Oh, David, darling! What a show you and those pigeons just put on. I would pay to see that again! I love how you took a serious bent and turned it upside down so we could see the smile. Nicely handled.
All my best,
Marie Gail

That’s a wonderful comment, MG. That made my night. 🙂
January 17th, 2015 at 1:51 am
Nicely done. What a surprise. I can’t imagine how you came up with this – pigeons colliding? Funny.
January 17th, 2015 at 9:39 pm
Sometimes I can tell you where an idea comes from, but with this one, I have no idea. 🙂
January 17th, 2015 at 9:33 am
You went for comedy on this one. Nice work. I laughed at the mimes in the washing machine…
January 17th, 2015 at 9:37 pm
Thanks, Miles. I thought of you when I wrote the mimes line, with your mime-punching and all. 🙂
January 17th, 2015 at 12:23 pm
That’s a fun little game. Nice take, David. I was surprised at the end. I like where you took this. I bet they play lots of little games to keep things interesting. A couple that can do this will stay together for a long time.
January 19th, 2015 at 8:22 pm
Dear David, Blink Tag! I love it, we have played this millions of times and what a nice story you placed this fond memory in. Great job! Nan 🙂
January 19th, 2015 at 8:43 pm
Thanks, Nan. Glad you liked it. I played that with my sisters a lot too, although I don’t remember that I was particularly good at it. As good as anyone, I guess.
