Tidings by Tide – Friday Fictioneers
About David Stewart
I am a writer of anything quirky and weird. I love most genres of fiction and in each there are stories that I would consider "my kind of story".

I cannot say how much I love this. I have never seen an epistolary tale told via messages in bottles – and the story is simple yet very menacing .Masterfully done.

Also – Innsmouth newspaper… Love it.

Glad you caught that detail. ๐ Just a little homage.

Thanks KT. I wracked my brains for a bit, trying to come up with a good story for this picture. Glad you liked it.

David,
What a creative way to handle the prompt this week! How did you come up with this? It’s as beautiful a “found” poem as I’ve ever seen, and full of more intrigue than most.
All my best,
Marie Gail

Thank you, Marie Gail for the wonderful comment! Not sure exactly how I came up with it, although if I retraced my mental spaghetti trails I could probably remember. You know how it is.

Wow, that is a wild story, David! Oh, you should so develop this one. I think it’s fascinating. I love how the notes are crinkled and really look like a cry for help. And, he’s stranded on Devil’s Reef. That can’t be good. Masterful, David. Great!
January 21st, 2015 at 11:43 pm
Thanks, Amy! Hmm, now you have me wondering how I could develop this further. We’ll see.
January 21st, 2015 at 11:50 pm
You totally should!

Great use of the prompt. Loads of fun and it leaves you wanting more. In fact, do it again!
January 22nd, 2015 at 7:35 pm
What, the idea of the notes or the story itself? ๐ Maybe I will.

That’s a truly creative take on the prompt. You’ve surpassed yourself this week. This is one I’ll probably have to come back to.

Dear David,
Got chills from this one. Hard to imagine such person to person correspondence via message in a bottle but I was hooked nevertheless. Good props, good story, good job.
Aloha,
Doug

Doug,
I was wondering what the turn around time would be for this sort of communication. I was thinking once every tide cycle at the most. That’s why I tried to limit the number of messages. Glad you liked it though.

Thank you, Rochelle. I confess this prompt gave me some trouble and I waffled over a couple ideas before I hit on this one. It took a bit of extra time, but I think it was worth it. Thanks for your kind words.

Wow.. the way you mix forms and media to convey a story where you still leave us stranded to the great mystery what really happened here… very very good.
January 23rd, 2015 at 6:45 pm
Thanks, Bjorn. A few other people have said I should follow up with something, but for in the meantime, you can decide. Of course, I threw in some Lovecraftian hints, just to make it more sinister.
January 24th, 2015 at 1:26 pm
wonderfully creative. Bravo. New fictional art form. Randy

Brilliant. A really engaging story, told with flair and imagination.

Dear David, Outstanding story and mystery! I would think that this is such a curious disappearance there would be many people involved in the location of the girl. Wonderful! Nan ๐
January 25th, 2015 at 2:55 pm
Thanks, Nan. Yes, I’m sure there would be many people searching. So what do you think? Who do you think Jack is?

I was almost “done” reading FF submissions this week. But realized I’d missed yours so went back. Awfully glad I did. Wonderful use of the prompt. Love the crinkled up papers and the use of shells.
