Brothers in the Fatherland
The guards never check the back, my brother Kurt had said.
I crouched in breathless darkness, rain Niagara Fallsing down the windows. Kurt was talking to the guard, getting me through security.
I gripped my pistol. Kurt was loyal but I knew that only a bullet in the tyrant’s head would set the nation free.
I heard a command and the van moved forward. We were in. Kurt thought this was intelligence bureau training. This would kill him.
I’m sorry, Kurt.
The van doors flew open. Rifles pointed at me. “I’m sorry,” Kurt said. “It kills me to do this.”

It didn’t happen quite the way he planned. It appears that he was set up from the beginning. I like the title, too.

Sometimes I find the title comes easily, but not in this case. This was the closest I could get to something concise and pithy. Glad you liked it.

Dear David,
It certainly killed one of them, didn’t it? I love the term Niagra Fallsing. Very creative. Better late than never.

It probably will kill one of them, although I guess you can fill in the rest of the story. I like the term Niagara Fallsing and might story using it in normal conversation, if it ever rains here again.

And so it goes…

It seems there’s not only no honor among thieves, there’s none between brothers either. Well done, David. 🙂 — Suzanne

Thanks, Suzanne. There may be honor of a sort, but definitely conflicting loyalties.

Ah, the perfect punishment for betraying your brother is him doing it more effectively. I’ll put in another vote for the great image of “Niagara Fallsing.”. I also like the twist on the meaning of it “killing” Kurt to do this – nicely done..

Thanks Joy. Actually, I thought of that term for the rain before I even thought of this story. 🙂 It is effective, eh?
